Lila attends ballet in Vancouver however the main studio for this company is in downtown Portland. Upon arrival at the studio in Portland Lila easily went with her teacher in to the back stage area, met some new friends who were her age and awaited her performance. We anticipated several other children from her class to arrive for the recital unfortunately she was the only one from her class. Again this was a small to-do.
Her performance was early in the program. The best thing that Lila had going for her in this whole thing was that she had no idea what to anticipate or even reason to know to be nervous. Lila's teacher got her set on stage and the music started (Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star). Immediately Lila got nervous and covered her ears. Her teacher came on stage and dance with her at which point Lila danced and was obviously unsure of herself. After the dance they transitioned into some leaps and Lila's disposition changed and I could tell she was enjoying herself. She event took her hands off of her ears and gave us some smiles.
Admittedly I think Scott's and my heart broke a little bit watching our little girl on stage at her first recital all by herself. It was especially heart breaking when she realized she was out there by herself in front of 150 people. Before the performance when Scott and I realized that she was going to be performing solo we said to each other that there was a 50/50 chance she would even stay on stage. We were so proud of Lila for sticking it out, getting comfortable and enjoying herself.
